Points of Interest

As a 148-acre property in the heart of northern New Mexico, Los Luceros features many cultural, architectural, and natural points of interest.

Plan Your Visit

Barn
A short distance from the Visitor Center, you can catch a glimpse of the Navajo Churro sheep that call Los Luceros home. Please refrain from feeding the animals.

Plan Your Visit

Victorian Cottage
The first historic building on the trail is a quaint cottage that was built in the late 1800s. This cottage was home to Abel Lucero whose family were the last of the Luceros to live on the property.

Plan Your Visit

Capilla
This beautiful chapel was deeded to the Archdiocese by the Ortiz family and is believed to have been initially constructed in the early 1700s. It is filled with religious folk-art by award-winning santera Clare Cresap Villa of Alcalde, NM.

Plan Your Visit

Hacienda
The Casa Grande, or Hacienda, is the oldest structure on the property. Archaeological evidence suggests it initially started as an Indigenous field house and was built upon during the Spanish Colonial, Territorial, and American periods.

Plan Your Visit

Gardens
Los Luceros features many secret gardens, most of which were developed or rehabilitated by Frank Cabot during the early 2000s. Many plantings are local varieties, but there are a few exceptions such as chestnut trees and varieties of peony.

Plan Your Visit

Río Grande
Once the border between Mexico and Territorial New Mexico, the property boasts almost one mile of riverfront access. Visitors can experience this unique riparian environment via trails and picnic areas.

Plan Your Visit

Bosque Loop Trail
A 3/4 mile trail that winds through the old-growth cottonwoods along the river, this area is undergoing a long-term restoration and is one of the most peacful areas of the site.

Plan Your Visit

Pond Loop Trail
A former apple orchard irrigation basin now acts as a refuge for wildlife. If you quietly approach this small body of water you can catch glimpses of waterfowl and potentially even an otter or beaver!

Plan Your Visit

Apple Orchard
Early spring is the time for pruning fruit trees in northern New Mexico. During the spring, visitors can walk through the orchard, but we ask that they keep a 50-foot distance from arborists working on the trees.

Site Amenitites and Accessibility

Two van-accessible parking spaces and ADA-compliant paths and restrooms are located in the Visitor Center area. The majority of trails outside of the Visitor Center are dirt, packed-gravel, and mulch. Visitors can request an "Access Pass" at the front desk or by calling from the parking lot. This pass allows visitors with limited mobility to drive through the historic district as well as near the river and natural ares.

Drinking water is available near the restrooms in the Visitor Center Courtyard during warm months. During winter months, complimentary bottles of water are available at the front desk.

Visiting With Pets

Pets on leashes are welcome at Los Luceros Historic Site. There is an abundance of wildlife on the property, so we ask pet owners to be aware of the presence of birds, squirrels, and beavers as we don't want to disturb our resident critters. We also suggest that visitors with pets avoid the livestock and barn areas of the site. Visitors with pets are required to collect pet waste. Trash cans and bags are available at the Visitor Center.
