Rock Squirrel

Otospermophilus variegatus

Rock squirrels can be seen at Los Luceros darting up trees, running across the road, and playing near the historic buildings.

Rock squirrels are native to Mexico and the southwestern United States. They live in burrows that they dig with their sharp claws. Did you know that these squirrels can go a long time without water? Some have been documented to go 100 days! Males are called bucks, females are called does, and they can have 3-9 pups in a litter.

Squirrels play an important part in an ecosystem, including plant dispersal, and they serve as a food source for predators. They do however tend to be very destructive to building foundations, so it is important to monitor them as well. But look how CUTE!
