In 1991, New Mexico State Monuments, the Museum of New Mexico, Navajo and Apache leaders, began the creation of this memorial to truthfully acknowledge the history here. Fort Sumner is listed on the State and National registers of Historic Places and was designated a New Mexico State Monument in 1968. The Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner opened on June 4, 2005. Friendly and knowledgeable rangers are here to assist you and answer questions. A gift shop with jewelry, leatherwork, and more and a book store are in the main building. The Bosque Redondo Memorial was designed by Navajo architect David Sloan. The architecture, with the oculus window above, refers to the natural world under the eye of the Great Spirit. Enjoy your tour.
