Sutler's Store
The building on the left of this photograph is a barracks or 'company quarters'. The people in the right are standing in front of the Sutler's Store. Virtually all Army posts had a sutler -a civilian who was franchised to maintain a general store for the convenience of the soldiers. Here one might obtain such diverse items as oysters, brass polish and liquor. This photograph was taken in 1866 from a spot just north of the highway.
