The officer's Quarters were built along the west side of the parade ground. After the abandonment of the fort in 1869, the site was purchased by Lucien Maxwell, a New Mexico cattle baron. Maxwell rebuilt one of the quarters into the 20 room house pictured in this 1883 photograph. It was in this house, on July 14, 1881, that Sheriff Pat Garrett's six-gun put an end to the career of Billy the Kid.
