2. LA ACEQUIA
The Irrigation Ditch

Acequias are irrigation ditches. The acequia system was brought to the Americas by the Spanish where they flourished. There are miles of acequias that cross all over the land. The Acequia Madre or Mother Ditch stretches 5 miles from where it begins at the Rio Grande and eventually loops back into the Rio Grande. Acequias generally run from Spring to Fall depending on the weather.

The acequias at Los Luceros date back to the 1700s, as do some of the cottonwoods that line the ditches.

Did you know?

Before the Spanish brought the acequia systems in the 1600s and 1700s, Indigenous Peoples used their own system of irrigation. They would use check dams and take advantage of the natural yearly flood events in the alluvial plains.
