10. EL BOSQUE
The Forest

"Bosque" in New Mexico has a unique connotation. It specifically references the thick forest that exists around the Rio Grande which consists mainly of cottonwood trees. The bosque at Los Luceros provides tree cover for the wildlife of the site which includes deer, elk, coyotes, porcupines, beavers, hundreds of bird species, and many more animals.

As you walk through the bosque trail be on the lookout for animal tracks and scat. You can usually hear multiple birds singing and if you look carefully you can see dozens of birds in the trees. You may also come across deer and elk in the brush.

More than 500 species of animals have been recorded living in the New Mexico bosque which includes reptile, amphibian, bird, and mammal species.
