Friends of Coronado & Jemez Historic Sites Lecture
At Coronado Historic Site
7/27/25, Sunday
2:00pm - 3:00pm
Friends of Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites
The Friends of Coronado & Jemez Historic Sites present a lecture by Diana Sherman, manager of the Archaeological Research Collections in Santa Fe entitled, "A Path Towards Community: Museum Collections Management in a New Era."
Do you ever wonder where all those excavated potsherds, ceramics and lithics wind up? Well, the Archaeological Research Collections in Santa Fe is one such repository. However, these collections are subject to evolving federal laws. As a result, the focus of research within this collection has also shifted and now serves and includes Native American communities. Today, archaeology and archaeologists are transforming their relationship with Tribes to forge new, improved field work that will benefit tribes and still offer protection of cultural resources into the future. This talk will cover, among other topics, a vision for the future of collections.
With degrees in Anthropology, Journalism, and Southwest Studies/Archaeology, Diana Sherman has been a Laboratory Manager at New Mexico Highlands University and the Collections Manager at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. In 2019 she became the Collections Manager at the Archaeological Research Collections where she is both curator and NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) coordinator. Today, most of Diana and her staff’s time is devoted to the repatriation and return of cultural items to Southwest Tribes.
The lecture is free and takes place at Martha Liebert Public Library in Bernalillo, 124 Calle Malinche Street, behind the Town Hall at 829 Camino del Pueblo.
