The History of Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Stanton
At Coronado Historic Site
5/18/25, Sunday
2:00pm - 3:00pm
Friends of Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites
Due to a family emergency, the original speaker for the May 18th Friends of Coronado & Jemez Historic Sites lecture, Ed McCool, is unable to participate. Join the Friends instead for a presentation by Fort Stanton Historic Site’s regional manager, Oliver Horn, Ph.D., for a presentation about the Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Stanton.
Most history buffs are vaguely aware of the existence of the Buffalo Soldiers, but do we know how they fit into New Mexico’s story? This talk will explore the history of the Buffalo Soldiers when they comprised the Ninth Cavalry at Fort Stanton from 1875 to 1881. Their role went beyond local law enforcement as they navigated a unique cultural landscape that was home to Indigenous, Hispanic, and Anglo peoples. Participants will learn how their varied campaigns were instrumental in securing New Mexico’s frontier.
Oliver Horn is a native of Albuquerque who earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in U.S. International History from Georgetown University. He taught Latin American History and International Affairs at Western Caroline University before returning to New Mexico in 2020. Founding Sunmount Consulting in Santa Fe, he made significant contributions to New Mexico’s approach to historic preservation and coauthored the "New Mexico Preservation Plan 2022 – 2031." Horn has been the regional site manager of Lincoln and Fort Stanton Historic Sites since 2023.
The lecture is free and takes place at Martha Liebert Public Library, Bernalillo on Caliche St Behind the Town Hall at 829 Camino del Pueblo.
