Casitas have been very popular in northern New Mexico on large estates for some time. In the past they mainly acted as guests houses or small homes for family members who could not or did not wish to live in the main house.
Today it is very common for casitas to be rented out as homes to other community members.

This casita was the main residence of Maria Chabot while she was the ranch manager here at Los Luceros in the 1940s and 1950s. A woman of many accomplishments, she was the women who began the Santa Fe market and was the first president of the local acequia association. Maria Chabot was one of the many female pioneers who spent part of their lives on the property of Los Luceros.
