VIRTUAL EVENT: Summer Letters From the Reservation
At Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner
8/29/20, Saturday through 9/29/20, Tuesday
Summer Letters from the Reservation is a collection of archival letters and oral stories from Fort Sumner Historic Site that describes the mindset of the United States Government towards Tribal polices in the American Southwest and the daily tribulations experienced by the Navajo and the Mescalero Apache in the months of June through August (1863-1868) while held captive on the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. These summer letters and oral stories, read in chronological order by Historic Sites staff and volunteers from around the world, reveal a micro-history of the failed experiment that was Fort Sumner and a moment in time when humanity was lost. Each letter/oral history is accompanied by photographs, newspaper clippings, and other artifacts to help tell the story. We encourage you to interact with the objects on every page.
Join in now and listen to history unfold..
