4:30pm - 7:30pm
Fort Sumner is running a special summer event on Saturday August 25 called “Summer Letters from the Reservation.” These letters and oral histories read in chronological order, represent the lives of the people on the Bosque Redondo Reservation as well as the policies employed by the U.S. government toward Navajo and Mescalero Apache people from the months of June, July, and August 1863 to1868. A free light supper will be served (first come first serve) from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. A summer menu will be served that will consist of brats, a Texas BBQ hotdog, an Italian style hotdog (bell peppers, onions, and a cream sauce), baked beans, potato salad, iced tea, and cookies for dessert. Supper will be followed by the letter reading at the Mescalero Apache Prayer Circle until 7:30 pm, complete with a campfire. This event is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
